After being fired from her job at the ABC for being married Merle Thornton decided she had to take a stand. Sick of being confined to their domesticity, in 1965 Merle and a friend went into the public bar in Brisbane and tried to order a lemonade. Because they were women, they were flat out refused and ordered out, but instead of bailing, they stepped it up and literally chained themselves to the bar in protest. They both faced a storm of publicity and response ranging from support to death threats. The event is still considered a pivotal moment in the Australian women's liberation movement, and is the reason women today can walk into their local pub and blow the froth off a cold one without a second thought.
