Merle Thornton | Sheilas
Get to know Merle
In 1965 after being fired from her job at the ABC for being married, Merle Thornton decided she had to take a stand. Sick of being confined to domesticity Merle and a friend went into the public bar in Brisbane and tried to order a lemonade. Because they were women, they were flat out refused and ordered to leave, but instead of bailing, they stepped it up and literally chained themselves to the bar. Merle is a true sheila because she proved that being a lady doesn’t mean you can’t get to work fighting for your rights. She is the reason women today can walk into a pub without a second thought and blow the froth off a cold one at their local. Which we think is bloody heroism.
